China: Day 1
We’re here … welcome to China!
We boarded our plane in Regina on Saturday morning (it still feels like this morning to us because we’ve been up for 26 hours) and left right on time. Thanks to Papa Sowden for the ride to Regina. During our two hour layover in Vancouver, we met Carol Anne (see picture on the right) and a few other travelers in our group.
We left Vancouver on time again and arrived in Beijing a little earlier than expected on Sunday afternoon at around 2:30 local time. Talk about a long stinkin’ flight … more about that later. Surprisingly, time flew by … pun intended.
Most of our trip was fairly uneventful. Much of our flight consisted of Asian folks making their way home with a few Canadians sticking out in the crowed. We just got back from dinner at an authentic Chinese restaurant. I’m told I ate some octopus, which I didn’t know at the time. That’s probably a good thing. Stacey rocked with the chopsticks!
They showed three movies on the flight here, which lasted about 11 ½ hours. The flight, not the movies. The first movie was “Hitch,” which is a pretty decent movie, made good mostly by a fat white guy who knows how to dance … “…everybody do the Q-tip!” The second movie starred a bunch of Chinese people we’ve never heard of. I didn’t bother to watch much of that one, but it seemed every time I looked up there were two Chinese people taking a roll in the hay … in the movie, not in the plane. How awkward would that have been? Guess what that movie was called. “Fear of Intimacy.” Interesting.
The third movie was “In Good Company,” a fairly recent comedy. It was during this movie that I missed part of the flick but experienced a little comedy of my own. About three-quarters of the way through the flight, we had a little turbulence. Against the better judgment of the stewardesses and the pilot himself, I decided to brave the shaky aisles and make a run for the bathroom. When nature calls, you gotta respond.
So I wobbled my way from my seat and down the aisle like it was my first day with the new feet. I was doing everything I could not to elbow some nice old Chinese lady or fall into the lap of an Asian guy I don’t really know. I mini-sprinted and finally made it to the bathroom, fully intent on taking care of business while there. Only when I was taking care of the aforementioned business, we thundered through some of the worst turbulence I’ve ever felt on a flight.
Now, after reflecting on this potentially messy situation, I suppose I have a few questions; concerns, perhaps. But there was one question that outweighed every other at that moment: how does a guy … hmmm … “hit the target,” shall we say … while being uncontrollably thrown around a three foot by four foot metal and plastic prison? Talk about working under pressure! The level of concentration to which every male is called in moments of greatness like that is what separates the men from the boys.
So there I stood – braced and ready for action – in my three by four dungeon, which desperately could have used an air-freshener, one forearm braced against the mirrored wall to my left and the other hand frantically grasping for anything to hold onto, and all the while, still trying to … “hit the target.” Again, how does a guy do that when one or both feet are involuntarily being hurled off the ground?!? Being a big guy, I didn’t really have a lot of room to spare. Being pushed around by an invisible bully didn’t help. I can only imagine the looks on the faces of the stewardesses (or airline attendants or whatever the politically correct title is) to hear all the banging coming from the bathroom. How convenient that they avoided eye contact with me when I finally came out.
Well, to spare you many of the gory details, I’m happy to report that everything came out OK … again, pun intended. What started as a quick trip to the can turned into a 20 minute stand-up roller coaster ride through downtown Hades.
Other than that, everything is good. Stacey, Carol Anne, and I are doing well and, as already mentioned, we have survived our first Chinese meal. We did a little shopping after dinner in a mall down the road, and it was crazy busy. You would never see this many people out shopping late on a Sunday night in Canada. It turns out I'm having difficulty posting pictures right now. I think it's due in part to the poor connection in this hotel. I'll try again tomorrow when we're at a different hotel.
Tomorrow’s agenda includes a two hour flight to Nanchang where we get Kaitlyn. I’ll be using the facilities before we leave in the morning, no doubt about it.

Well HELLLLOOOOO CHINA!
Just read your musings about the trip Kevin, I can only imagine the bathroom scene, but then again, maybe I don't really want to picture that sight! LOL
I am so glad Stacey called this morning, as you can imagine, its been one loooooooooooooong night here and I am expecting yet another long night tonight.
Stacey even used chopsticks!!!! I am surprised she even considered eating the Chinese Cusine but then I guess its better than starving eh?
I am glad you said about the difficulty of posting the pictures, at first I thought it was my stupidity of not being able to follow the directions (to the RIGHT) as I couldn't find them. Will look forward so seeing them tomorrow now then.
You two take care now and hopefully you got a good nights sleep. Looking forward to the phone call in the morning, and hopefully you can post some pics then as well of the entire family.
I would say, 'have a good day tomorrow' but it seems incidental now since you will be having one of the GREATEST days of your life!
I'll be counting the hours/minuits now until I hear from you and Kaitlyn. See if you can teach her to say "Hi Nannie' by then eh? LOL
love you lots, Mum xoxo
Greetings from Canada!
Glad to hear you arrive ok!!! I posted a comment under anticipation refreshed the page and saw your new posting....Anyway your bathroom experience to say the least was entertaining to read. Good Luck on your flight tommorrow hopefully the call of nature doesn't strike in the mist of airplane turb. again!
Wow, what a quick post. It is hard to believe you are already there. Have a great time. We are praying for you guys. later
Hi Guys,
It's good to hear that you arrived safely. I've been wondering how the trip has been going and so far it sounds like quite the adventure... and it's only just the beginning!
I'm so excited for you guys to meet Kaitlyn. There's been so much planning, research, paperwork, preparing and now you're finally there about to meet face-to-face for the first time. I can hardly believe it! I'm excited and I can hardly imagine your excitment.
We'll be looking forward to hearing more. Can't wait for your return and to meet Kaitlyn. Also, I hear that sparrows are quite a delicacy in China...
Matt has also been anxious to find out if Mom was able to fly business class at any point.
Love you and thinking of you,
Karen
Hi Stacey and Kevin
We were away camping this weekend and just got back. Bev said your flight was good and everything was going okay. I just read your first day in China. Isn't technology great. It is hard to believe we can be so far away any yet so close-hearing moment by moment happenings. Can't wait to see updated pictures of your Kaitlyn. I'm sure you are just as excited as if you where in labour yourself Stacey, and Kevin the pacing expectant father. We enjoy so much hearing about your unique "labour pains" and are privileged to be able to read about it as you share.
You are in our prayers daily and it is with anticipation that I read your comments.
Love Aunt Alison
Sounds like your on-flight bathroom experience could have given another meaning to your blog name. All is well in your home, Dreyfuss misses you but is doing well. We had a great day at the lake and hope to take him out again. On;y had one party so far, broke one vase, so don't tell Stacey. Just kidding.
Thought about you both often on Sat. Carol and I kept figuring out what time it was and where you might be. It is hard to believe that you were in Moose Jaw yesterday and today are in China. In just a few hours you will be meeting Kaitlyn for the first time. She is a blest little girl to have you two for parents. I liked Braden's comment about the brown title/airplane bathroom. Your sense of humour reminds me of your father's Braden. Great party by the way Braden, I think I can pick up a vase just the that one and Stacey will never know.
Take care
Carl
Glad to hear you arrived safe and sound, though the little guy was a bit shaken up LOL.
it is 8am over here now and by our time you will be picking up Kaitlyn in an hour, can't wait to get mums call, it is so exciting!
take care all of you, God bless, Rosemarie & Pete x
"he shoots he scores" and the crowd goes wild (ok maybe not :), soccer analogies were never my strong points. Anyhoo so glad to see you guys arrived safe and sound, and can't wait for the next installment of the story.
God Bless
Love Margery, Dean, Christine and Rachel
Here I thought my humour was different from my fathers, more like my brothers.
